Looking for beautiful views if San Diego? Then look no further than the Cabrillo National Monument. The state park is on the southern tip of Point Loma and is open daily for both guided and self-guided tours. There are photo opportunities at every turn, so be sure to bring your camera.
The monument commemorates the landing of Juan Rodriguez Cabrillo on September 28, 1542. Along with the amazing scenery, there is a small museum with information on local wildlife. The Cabrillo National Monument is open daily from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Entry fees are $5 per vehicle or $3 for bicyclists and walk-ins. Museum entry is free.
While you’re in the area, the Old Point Loma Lighthouse is another must-see. The lighthouse was built in 1855 and remains the highest point in San Diego. In 1984, however, a new lighthouse was placed at a lower elevation. Free daily tours share historical artifacts and interesting local information.
Before you leave, take a drive down to the tide pools. In the winter, witness migrating gray whales off the coast. Kids will love to explore the shores and watch as kelp crabs run along the beach.
